Savory Ham and Cheese French Toast
Use a little cheese or a lot if you prefer a melty gooey sandwich. Use a little ham for a lighter sandwich, or a lot for a hearty serving.
Prep time: 15 minutes
Stand time: at least 15 minutes
Cook time: about 10 minutes
3/4 cup Chobani Oat Milk (any non-sweetened variety)
1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
Pepper to taste
6 large slices rye bread, halved
6 slices Havarti, Swiss or Gouda or smoked Gouda cheese (or a mixture)
Thinly sliced ham
Butter
Whisk together oat milk, mustard, eggs, garlic salt and pepper in a shallow baking dish. Layer cheese and ham between 2 pieces of bread making sure to have a layer of cheese on each bread sliced (this will keep the sandwich from falling apart when turning). Carefully add sandwiches to egg batter, turning to coat both sides and letting the mixture soak into the bread. (Recipe may be prepared a day ahead at this point and stored covered in the refrigerator until ready to cook.)
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sandwiches and cook until golden brown on both sides and cheese is melted, working in batches if necessary. Serve immediately.
Recipe tip:
For a crunchy exterior, add a bit of cheese to the skillet before adding the sandwiches. The cheese will caramelize and form a crunchy layer.
